advent...

Posted on 06:42 by Unknown

Tomorrow is the start of advent - hurrah!
For my two boys it couldn't come sooner.  The count down of days until Christmas Day.   Rufus started asking me in mid-November, 'how many days now Mummy?'  And who can blame him?  It's exciting, no?

This year I decided to make my own advent calendar - little packages of excitement to open every morning.  I've had so much fun doing it, thinking of cheap and different things for each day.

Here's how I did it:

First I thought up what would come on each day... on some days there is a definite activity/surprise happening. So I wrapped up something that would signify it.

My list is as follows:

1. Something to read (new small book)
2 Chocolate Coin
3. Tattoo
4. Chocolate Coin
5. Dinosaur glider
6. Lion & Wolf (going to Longleat to see Father Christmas and the Animals)
7. Picture of a Cat & a Fiddle (going to the Theatre to see Hey Diddle Diddle)
8. Chocolate Coin
9. Christmas Cards (the boys can write them to their friends at school)
10. Tattoo
11. Chocolate Coin
12. Lego Mini Figure
13. Lego Tree (choosing and cutting down our Christmas Tree)
14. Lego Mini Figure
15. A sheet of tracing paper (to make snowflakes for the window)
16. Train tickets (going to Bath on the train with Grandparents to the Panto)
17. A bauble to go on the tree
18. Popcorn (watch the Polar Express)
19. Badge
20: Tea Light (to make Solstice Lanterns)
21. Marshmallow (Hot chocolate after school in a cafe - end of term!)
22. Addressed envelope to the North Pole (write a letter to the big man)
23. Star shaped cutter (to make biscuits)
24. A jewel (to make a crown for Nativity at the church)

So.. as you can see lots of trips and activities.  Of course there is chocolate and chocolate coins are sooo Christmas aren't they?  And Lego - there HAS to be Lego in this house.  I have had so much fun - I love this time of year.

I used a mix of brown paper and red & white striped paper from Ikea.  Tied them to a Silver Birch branch with bakers twine and hung it from our fireplace.  (The branch we found in the park, blown down in the recent storms).

You will notice not all the days are up there, I didn't want it to seem too cluttered, so I will be adding to it as the weeks go by.

I love the finished result.
Hope you can have a go too.

Nature in the home - a series...

Posted on 01:42 by Unknown
image via here

Hello!
This weeks Nature in the Home is the start of my Christmas collection.
Only 4 weeks til the big day and I am starting to think about decorations and bringing greenery into my little space.
Little is the word.  My home is tiny, so whatever I can squeeze in has to do the job without over powering everything else.  I still need to get into the kitchen without having a HUGE tree blocking the way! (a much heated debate in our home!).
I love this simple idea, above.  A gorgeous vintage Christmas cake tin, with a branch from the Christmas tree.  Moss and walnuts for decoration.  And to complete the look, one simple candle.
Simple.
Beautiful.
(Christmas pig?)

house love...

Posted on 05:07 by Unknown

Look at this home, black and white is uber cool at the moment, isn't it?  Like this babes home.. super stylish.
This home Swedish home above is light, bright, clean and tidy.  Everything has room to breathe.  I am loving the copper lamp and the apple and pear print.  I LOVE copper at the moment.  I keep going back to that lamp in Habitat - I have no idea where it will go in the house, but I love it.

*sigh*

My friend Lottie has started a series of posts on her blog called 'Project Simplify'  - her and her hubby are BRAVE.  Clearing their entire home from top to bottom.  Lottie has inspired me to do something the same.

During the Christmas break, you know those 3 days between the festive fun, when you've eaten and drank too much and really need a project - then Dan and I are planning to sort out the home.

I am really starting to look at all corners of my space, trying to simplifying and use everything I own.
No longer hoard stuff just because it's there.  To love everything, and for everything to have a purpose be it useful or beautiful or sentimental (i.e kids drawings and certificates).

In my home storage is both the problem and the cure. There are many piles of boxes under the stairs or in my studio, without a proper place for it to go.  My plan is to go through the lot, systematically (like Lottie) and then provide storage (probably Ikea) to hide it all away!

*bliss!*
Cannot wait.

Oh and a little heads up... there is 15% off this weekend in my ETSY shop - using the code CYBER15.  Offer ends Monday night!

More images of this home here.

The Original Pop-Up Shop...

Posted on 10:08 by Unknown

Okay - so it's only 5 weeks til the big day.. have you started shopping yet?  I did, today.  Just a few little bits for an advent calendar I am thinking of. It is so exciting!
Tell me, when do you start on your decorations?  On Instagram recently, I have noticed a lot of people have started to bring some glitz and shimmer into their home already.  Have you?  I can't wait, but as a rule I have to wait until the 14th December in our home... (this is Dan's birthday) so on the 15th our house gets glitzed!

I've recently discovered this wonderful shop - The Original Pop-Up Shop.  Starting three years ago, using the old Ice Cream Parlour next to their home, for the 6 week run up to Christmas it transforms into a Christmas pop up shop - selling the best of decorations, wreathes and all things interiors for Christmas.  Last year it launched an on-line shop too, so we can shop there.  (The real life shop is in Newark, Nottinghamshire, UK).

I love those little baking tin candle holders... and this year I WILL finish my felt ball wreath I started last year, this one is stunning!. Yep... I might have to have a white paper snowflake or two, too!  Do go and check it out - it has some lovely stuff.

How do you decorate for Christmas - do you have a style?

sun - day...

Posted on 13:58 by Unknown

Oh my!
What a BEAUTIFUL day it has been.
We woke to the sound of hot air balloons floating over our roof top.  Ballooning in November - bonkers!
But the day was so perfect, I couldn't blame them!  A crisp hard frost had hit Bristol, with glorious sunshine and hazy watery skies.
After feasting on Nutella pancakes for breakfast, we pulled on our woollies and boots. Gathered up my camera and went for an early morning stomp up through Ashton Court.
Sunlight was slanting through the yellow leaves, everything was touched by silver... glistening like fairy dust in the sunshine.
We threw leaves in the air, listened to woodpeckers, ran over the hills and bathed in the Autumnal glory of it all.
Days like these fill me with such joy, it fills me up for the week a head.
Have a great week.

nature in the home.. a series

Posted on 00:50 by Unknown

Today's nature in the home comes from the blog - the marion house book
A beautiful home of interior designer Emma Reddington.
*sigh*
Where do I start?!
Her house is stunning!  In a grown up luxe kind of way.
I've pinned most of her rooms.. and swooned over the black walls and wood.
This studio area is just dreamy. I could sit here for hours, snuggled in the sheepskin.
I love the branch on the wall - and the small succulent on the desk.
Simple and understated - yet stunningly beautiful at the same time.
Please go see her home/blog - it's a beauty!

friday...

Posted on 00:58 by Unknown

Ahh it's Friday... how nice does that feel?  Good I can tell you.
The image above was taken whilst walking into work on Tuesday.  It was one of the magical golden moments. With the sun hitting the Matthew ship... making it glow.
Beautiful!
This weekend we are doing some bits of home improvements, walking in the woods, having play dates and for me, getting stock ready for my first Christmas market next weekend!  eeeek!

If you look up there on the top header bar, you can see a tab called Events.  On this page I've listed all of the  Christmas Markets and Shops I am involved in over the Christmas period... do pop by if you are in the area.

Also a little reminder that the Cable and Cotton giveaway ends on Sunday.  So there is still time to enter or re-enter if you like!

So... there you go!

Nature in the home - a series...

Posted on 01:18 by Unknown

Good day!
Today's nature in the home comes from the quite wonderful flickr pages of Brian Ferry.
I have had a love of affair with his photography for a long time.  And he does love to feature plants!
I have also had a long time love affair for succulents and cacti.
I always think of my mum when I look at Cacti - she hates them!  Teehee... I think they are beautiful, architectural and dangerous!  A great combination.
These weathered terracotta pots against this greeny/grey wall is just gorgeous.... a taste of the Mediterranean.

Bee Geo A3

Posted on 05:16 by Unknown

Hello!
Just popping in to show my new A3 print.
It's a bee (Dan thinks it looks like a wasp - But I was going for a bee as they are friendlier!)
This is part of my submission for the Insect and Bugs exhibition I was talking about back here.
It will be buzzing it's way into the shop today - if I can get my two boys to stop bickering for 5 minutes!
Back to school tomorrow and I can finally breathe out!

Also whilst I am here - just a quick quick heads up about posting for Christmas.
A3 prints going overseas can sometimes take up to 5 weeks posting - so if you are thinking of buying one for Christmas, you had better get buying to ensure it arrives in good time.
Only 7 weeks to go - eeek!

Shimmering season & a giveaway...

Posted on 03:49 by Unknown

As we creep closer to the mid winter solstice - days are getting shorter and darker.
At this time of year I like to fill my home with candles and have fairy lights on to brighten every room.  To bring some shimmer in the gloom.

Recently, I was kindly sent a set of Cable and Cotton lights.  If you haven't heard of them - you should go and look at their site.
Beautiful strings of cotton balls which attach to white lights - when lit they give off a happy warm glow.
For me, the fun part is choosing which colour ball to have.
Gosh that was such a hard decision, I can tell you.  Backwards and forwards - pink or not pink!
I am so pleased with the finished look... they really brighten up my shelves in the lounge.  I just need to attach some little cup hooks to the under side of the shelves to hang them properly, as it looks a little cluttered up there.

Thank you Cable and Cotton - I absolutely LOVE my new lights!

Cable and Cotton have kindly given a me a set to giveaway to a lucky Littlegreenshed reader!
Perfect for the up coming season!
There many ways to enter!
